I am pleased to report preparations for the 2009 Ficifolia Festival are well underway.  The organising committee is especially keen to build on the strength of this hugely successful community-based festival.  The Ficifolia Festival will celebrate its 21st year in 2009 – a truly amazing achievement.  With support of many local businesses and community groups, the Ficifolia Festival has become an integral part of the local community– and we hope the 2009 festival will be even more vibrant and successful.

The 2009 Ficifolia Festival will primarily be run over the period 12-15 February 2009.  We believe this shorter period will ensure and enhance focus on the key events we believe will entertain and enthrall all the community.

Each year, a festival theme is used to introduce a primary focus.  The theme adopted by the organising committee for the 2009 Ficifolia Festival is “World of Music”.

The Ficifolia Festival is not a music festival – it’s a festival for the community to be engaged and entertained in a variety of ways.  The 2009 theme simply introduces as a focus for the 2009 festival by invoking the colour, diversity and entertainment of the magical world of music.  We will specifically focus on this theme, via a number of musical events.  The full Festival program is still in development – however, let me detail a few significant events.

  •   Following a successful introduction in 2008, a free and family-focussed outdoor concert will be held on Friday 13th February 2009 in Civic Park.  This family-friendly event will feature a variety of entertainments including music and roaming performers – the Royal Australian Naval Show band will be a headline act and are sure to entertain all ages.  At the conclusion of the evening of entertainment, a dazzling fireworks display will light the sky.  The 2008 fireworks display was spectacular – our plan for 2009 will ensure a repeat of the sheer spectacle and magic of fireworks.
  •   On Saturday 14th February 2009, the now traditional Ficifolia Festival Street Parade will fill the Drouin shopping centre with colour and energy.  The Street Parade will draw people to the “Party in the Park” located in the delightful Civic Park.
  •   The Party in the Park also on Saturday 14th February 2009 is a truly festive event with food and market stalls and activities to engage and entertain adults and children of all ages.  In line with the “World of Music” theme, an afternoon of musical entertainment is planned.  The venue will be the Civic Park soundshell and will feature a diverse and unforgettable range of music drawn from and celebrating the many cultures in modern Australia.  We are finalising the program but we envisage an afternoon of styles such as African drumming, Scottish bagpipes, Middle Eastern Belly Dancing and Latin grooves to provide an unforgettable afternoon of entertainment.

Although these are the main events, the 2009 Ficifolia Festival will feature a wide range of events too numerous to mention now.  The complete Program is being developed and will be available soon.
